WHAT HAPPENS DURING FACELIFT SURGERY AFTER MASSIVE WEIGHT LOSS?

After massive weight loss, many people experience excess skin in different parts of their body. Because the skin is often not able to fully retract after being stretched, large folds of skin can appear on the arms, abdomen, and thighs. When this happens, plastic surgery after weight loss can remove excess skin and tighten underlying tissues.

Sagging skin can also appear on the face. This is one of the most troubling aftereffects of massive weight loss, as this skin cannot be effectively concealed. The effects of massive weight loss on the face include sagging cheeks, deep nasolabial folds, and sagging jowls. This can cause problems for weight-loss patients that include:

  • low self-esteem
  • difficulty getting a job, especially in the service sector
  • hygiene problems, including rashes and infections

Fortunately, excess skin on the face that results from massive weight loss can be corrected through facelift surgery. Cosmetic surgeons can use incisions hidden at the hairline, which loop around the front of the ear, to remove this excess skin and tighten the underlying muscles of the face.

FACELIFT OR FILLERS? HOW TO CHOOSE

More and more patients are considering facial fillers before they decide to get cosmetic surgery. Products like Juvederm™, Radiesse™ and Restylane™ have emerged as relatively inexpensive alternatives to face lift surgery. These treatments are ideal for people with busy lifestyles.

If you’ve already had treatment with injectable fillers, you may be considering a more long-term solution to the signs of aging. During a consultation, we can help you decide between facelift surgery or a minimally invasive alternative such as Juvederm™ or Radiesse™.

What’s Causing a Rise in Facial Plastic Surgery? Selfies!

It’s estimated that, in 2013, one in four people were using social media around the world and a large percentage of those users were young women and men.  What’s perhaps more staggering is a recent claim by the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) that social networks like Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat are causing a recent rise in facial plastic surgery procedures.

Recently, the AAFPRS disclosed that 1 in 3 plastic surgeons have seen a spike in requests for facial plastic surgeries due to “selfies”; self-portraits usually taken with camera phones that are then posted to social media sites.  Selfies have become so popular that a Google search for “take perfect selfie” yields 121,000,000 results that include in-depth articles, blogger tips, and even video tutorials on YouTube.

When asked about the increase in requests, surgeons reported to the AAFPRS that 13% of patients said that sharing photos on social media outlets led them to feel dissatisfied with the way they look and caused them to explore facial plastic surgery options.  Compared to 2012 and earlier years, more young women and men looked into procedures like eyelid surgery, rhinoplasty, and even hair transplants to improve their appearance in 2013.  In fact, the AAFPRS reported that 50% of the plastic surgeons that participated in their survey said candidates seeking facial cosmetic surgery and/or injectables like Botox® were age 30 and under.
