Quick Facts

Quick Info

  • A breast lift is a 2-3 hour procedure performed in our operating room under general anesthesia.
  • The recovery takes about a week, but you should not lift anything heavy or work out for at least 4 weeks.
  • Breast lifts can often be done with implants to provide more “fullness”.
  • During a breast lift the areola size is also reduced if needed.
  • A breast reduction is done in the same way as a breast lift, but tissue is removed at the same time.
  • The incisions are usually made in a “keyhole” fashion and closed with absorbable sutures to minimize scarring.

Before Breast Lift Surgery

If you're looking for a breast lift in Bakersfield or nearby, call our Beautologie facility for more information. Before performing breast lift surgery, your doctor will meet with you in an initial consultation to determine if you are a good candidate for the procedure and to discuss the procedure's risks and benefits. During the consultation, your doctor will help you decide if the breast lift surgery should be performed on its own or also as a breast augmentation procedure with breast implants for added enhancement.

Once you have been determined to be a good candidate for breast lift surgery by our Bakersfield, Fresno and Stockton surgeons, you will undergo a mammogram to help your doctor fully understand your breast structure prior to the procedure.

As a preparatory measure, all breast lift patients who smoke are advised to quit smoking at least two to four weeks before the procedure. Also, patients should avoid taking aspirin, ibuprofen, blood thinners, and other similar medications because they can increase bleeding.

Breast Lift Procedure

The incisions used in breast lift surgery vary depending on the needs of the patient. Prior to surgery, your doctor will discuss the incision technique that will provide optimal results. Our most commonly used incision is the vertical (or lollipop keyhole) incision. He will also provide you with an honest assessment of the residual scarring you can expect. Once incisions are made, excess skin and tissue are removed to lift and reshape the breasts, and the nipples are placed in a higher position.

Results and Recovery

Breast lift surgery can produce breathtaking results. It is important for patients to understand the recovery process for breast lift surgery so they can prepare. In the first several weeks following breast lift surgery, patients can expect to experience soreness and numbness in the nipples. As recovery progresses, patients can slowly resume normal activities, and full physical abilities can be resumed after 4-6 weeks. Over this period, the cosmetic results of your breast lift will become more and more apparent, coming to full fruition after about two months.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the different kinds of breast lifts and which is most common?

The four kinds of breasts lifts are: the crescent lift (also known as the mini-lift), the vertical lift (also known as keyhole or lollipop lift), the full lift (also known as the anchor lift) and the Banelli lift (also known as the circum-areolar lift).   The most commonly performed lift is the vertical lift.  At our practice, the vertical lift is performed for almost 85% of lifts, while the crescent lift is performed 10% and the anchor lift is done rarely at 5% of the time.  We do not like to use the Banelli lift since the scar is often unpredictable and widens frequently.  The type of lift required is determined by the amount of sagging of the breasts.  The more skin that needs to be removed, the more incisions you need to remove it.   The vertical lift allows us to remove a significant amount of skin while still minimizing the amount of incisions needed.  The anchor, or “full”, lift has an incision under along the breast fold.  This lift is used only for women requiring a very large amount of skin removal.   The only way to know what kind of lift (or if a lift is needed at all) is for a plastic surgeon to examine the patient and make critical measurements of the skin thickness, sagging, and relationships.  No one can ever tell you this information over the phone or by looking at someone with his or her clothes on.

lift types

When the nipple and areola are moved in a breast lift, do they lose sensation?  Why or why not?

It is extremely rare to lose sensation after moving the nipple and areola.  This almost never happens the way we do breast lifts, because we leave the NAC (short for “nipple areolar complex”) completely attached to all the blood vessels and nerves underneath it when we move it upwards.  A common misconception is that the NAC is removed, then “pasted” back on during the surgery. This is NOT true.  In fact, maintaining the blood and nervous supply of the NAC is one of the surgeon’s main goals during the surgery.

Does the breast lift surgery leave a bad scar?  Why or why not?

The answer is, for most people, “no, the scar is minimal”.  Our plastic surgeons minimize the scar by using a precise suturing technique involving 3 layers of sutures under the breast skin.  These sutures are all dissolvable and do not need to be removed.  Since they are under the skin, the scar ends up like a fine line after 6 months to a year.  Another key component for scar healing is the patient taking care of it afterwards.   Beautologie provides all of it’s patients with a special brown tape to use on the scar, followed by the ScarStick™ which contains vitamin E, silicone and other scar minimizing ingredients.  Of course, some people may have the rare genetic tendency to form thick scars no matter how well they are taken care of (these are called hypertrophic scars or keloids).  Our plastic surgeons are experts at helping to minimize these scars as well, utilizing techniques like steroid injections and lasers.   In short, it is our goal to have as minimal a scar as possible, and in most cases they are barely visible to the human eye.

Do breast lifts involve the use of drains or implants?

We never need to use drains during a straightforward breast lift.  Drains are only sometimes used in cases of breast reduction where someone has very large breasts and need a significant amount of breast tissue removed at the time of the lift.   You may see surgeons on TV use drains during a breast lift, but this is very uncommon …but it makes for dramatic TV!   Implants may be used during a breast lift if the woman also requires or desires more volume in their breast, in addition to the lift.  A breast lift done alone can reduce the size of a woman’s breast by a cup size or more.  Many women want to maintain cup size, or increase “superior pole fullness” (the roundness near the top of the breast that is part of the “cleavage”).  If this is the case, either saline or silicone implants can be used at the same time as the breast lift to solve these issues.

Can a breast lift be performed in conjunction with other surgeries, like a tummy tuck or liposuction?

Absolutely!  We commonly perform many combinations of procedures together, especially the breast lift (with our without implants) with a tummy tuck and liposuction.  This combo, known as the “mommy makeover”, is a 3-4 hour procedure that has a recovery time of about 2-4 weeks. Safety is always our number one priority, so your surgeon may recommend you separate the surgeries if you have multiple health issues.   We have done thousands of mommy makeover procedures where patients are thankful that they only had one recovery and were able to take care of all of their post pregnancy issues at the same time.
