What Is BOTOX® Cosmetic?

BOTOX® Cosmetic is an injectable substance made from botulinum toxin type A, a neuromuscular toxin. BOTOX® Cosmetic is a highly-diluted form of the toxin that has been proven to be safe and that was approved for use in cosmetic treatments by the Food and Drug Administration in 2002. BOTOX® injections are used to relax facial muscles. Because facial muscles cannot contract after treatment with BOTOX®, the injections temporarily smooth out and ease the appearance of lines and wrinkles on the face. BOTOX® injections are often used in conjunction with or in replacement of many facial cosmetic surgery treatments such as facelift, brow lift, and eyelid surgery.

BOTOX® Cosmetic Procedure

During the BOTOX® Cosmetic procedure, Dr. Milan Shah determines where to administer the injections by asking the patient to contract his or her facial muscles. He then uses an extremely thin needle to inject BOTOX® Cosmetic into the muscles that are causing the wrinkles and lines on the face. Anesthesia is usually not required since the procedure is quick and relatively pain free. The entire BOTOX® cosmetic procedure takes less than an hour, and patients can resume their normal activities immediately after treatment. Because of this, the treatment is usually considered a "lunchtime" procedure.
