Medical-Grade Chemical Peels

Dr. Milan Shah offers a variety of highly effective chemical peels to patients from Bakersfield, San Luis Obispo, and beyond for the treatment of acne, fine lines, wrinkles, discolorations, and other skin issues. Chemical peels work by removing damaged layers of skin to reveal healthier skin underneath. Dr. Shah provides each patient with a specially customized chemical peel treatment that best meets the patient's needs. Patients who undergo a chemical peel may experience tingling, reddening, and peeling of the skin for a few days after the procedure. However, side effects are mild and disappear as the skin adjusts to the treatment, resulting in beautiful, glowing facial skin.

Glycolic Acid Chemical Peels

Glycolic acid peels are the gentlest chemical peels we offer at our Bakersfield practice. Made from glycolic acid derived from sugar cane, these light chemical peels exfoliate layers of skin damaged from sun exposure, acne, and other factors. Glycolic acid peels also eliminate fine lines and effectively address rough, dry, or discolored skin. The glycolic acid also stimulates collagen and elastin production, key for youthful, healthy skin. After just ten minutes of treatment, you can achieve younger, smoother skin and a more even skin tone.

TCA Chemical Peels

For patients who desire more dramatic results, we also offer TCA chemical peels at our Bakersfield- and San Luis Obispo-area practice. TCA chemical peels are performed with trichloroacetic acid and offer an effective and non-invasive solution to acne scars, fine lines and wrinkles, and skin discolorations. The trichloroacetic acid removes layers of dull or dead skin cells, revealing brighter, fresher skin with an improved tone and texture. Patients can benefit from radiant skin after just fifteen minutes of treatment. A series of chemical peels spread over several months may be necessary to achieve the desired results.

Obagi Blue Peel® System

In addition to our amazing glycolic acid and TCA chemical peels, our Bakersfield practice is pleased to feature the Obagi Blue Peel® System for a chemical peel treatment that is completely customized to your unique skin care needs. The Obagi Blue Peel® is a combination of trichloroacetic acid and a special blue paste that controls the speed of the treatment process. Levulan® Photodynamic Acne Therapy

In addition to the Obagi Blue Peel® System and the other amazing chemical peels we perform at our Bakersfield- and San Luis Obispo-area practice, we also offer photodynamic acne therapy using Levulan® for the treatment of mild to moderate acne that has become resistant to medication over time. Photodynamic acne therapy can also be used to treat rosacea, age spots, skin discoloration, and other common skin conditions. The treatment combines Intense Pulsed Light™ (IPL®) therapy with the powerful and effective Levulan® Kerastick® photosensitizing solution, which is made from aminolevulinic acid, a substance that is found naturally in the body. Together, Levulan® and IPL® combat the source of acne to prevent new breakouts and improve the condition of facial skin and appearance.

Photodynamic Acne Therapy Procedure

During the procedure, the Levulan® Kerastick® photosensitizing formula is applied to the face 90 minutes prior to IPL® photo facial rejuvenation treatment. IPL® energy activates the Levulan®, which helps to kill acne-causing bacteria on the face. The energy also unclogs pores and stops the production of oil from the sebaceous glands. The result is clear, virtually flawless skin. Patients may experience redness, peeling, and sensitivity to sunlight following treatment; however, these and other side effects should disappear within two days. For the ultimate results, patients should undergo three to four photodynamic acne therapy treatments that are spaced four to six weeks apart.
