Understanding Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is a popular form of cosmetic surgery that involves the use of saline or silicone filled implants to change the shape, size and feel of a woman’s breast.   Implant surgery began in the 1800’s when a physician began using fatty tissue as a filler.  Many different types of fillers were experimented with in the years that followed, including wax, rubber, glass, animal cartilage, oil, wool, sponges, foam, and tape.

In the early 1960’s the silicone implant was introduced.  Silicone is compound that has a consistency similar to rubber, and was first used in the manufacturing industry as a sealant and adhesive.  A few years later the saline implant was developed, which contains a solution of salt and water.

Unlike silicone implants, a saline implant is filled after it has been inserted either within the breast tissue or under the chest muscle.  The means a smaller incision can be made compared to a silicone implant.  However, silicone implants are considered to more closely approximate the look and feel of a natural breast.

Implants can be placed using incisions under the arm, around the nipple and in the crease under the breasts.   We believe the safest of these incisions is the one located at the IMF (inframammary fold) which is the fold under the breast.  The incision is only an inch or less long, and heals beautifully.  The area is well hidden under the fold of the breast, making it the least visible of all the incisions.  Best of all, it is the least invasive way to place an implant, resulting in faster healing times and reduced risks of complications.

Our office believes the best placement for an implant is beneath the pectoral muscle.  This increases the stability of the implant, which is extremely important when it comes to maintaining the breast’s post-surgery shape.   It also protects the implant and results in lower rates of capsular contracture (scar tissue around the implant) Other types of placement techniques include locating the implant between the breast tissue and muscle, or partially underneath the muscle.

The initial recovery from breast augmentation surgery will take between 24 and 72 hours, and full recovery from a few weeks.  Patients can expect some soreness and swelling that will dissipate as time goes on.  We also recommend that patients consult with their surgeon before returning to their normal activities.
