Saline vs. Silicone Implants

If you are thinking about having breast augmentation surgery, there are many factors to consider, one of the most important being which type of implant is right for you. At Beautologie Cosmetic Surgery & Laser Center, our highly skilled surgeons utilize both saline and silicone implants in their breast augmentation procedures. There are pros and cons to each.

Silicone implants were frowned upon during the ’90’s. Eventually they were pulled off the market. After much testing, the FDA discovered no link between them and autoimmune disease and re-approved them for use in 2006 after a complete redesign. The main advantage of silicone implants for many women is that they feel more like a “real” breast. There’s also little to no chance of “rippling or wrinkling” in the implant, making them a great choice for women, especially petite women with very little breast tissue to start with. The primary disadvantage of silicone implants is that when they rupture, the break is often hard to detect. An MRI is required to detect a break in the outer capsule. The inner portion of the implant is made with a solid silicone that has the consistency of a “Gummy Bear” and does not leak the way the old liquid silicone implants did.

This is not the case with saline implants. When one of them ruptures, the breast completely deflates as the body reabsorbs the saline. The other main advantage to saline is that the implant can be size adjusted after placement. With saline, the surgeon inserts the implant rolled up like a cigar and then fills it with the appropriate amount of fluid once it’s already in place. The main disadvantage to saline is that they feel firmer and some women complain of detectable wrinkles on the surface and outer edges of the implant.
