New Wristband Provides UV Over-Exposure Alert

When does fun in the sun become sunburn? It’s often impossible to tell that you’ve had too much sun until you’ve already been burned. But it’s more than mere discomfort – excessive UV exposure can cause sun damage and increase your risk of skin cancer. Fortunately, it seems that a Swedish company and Scottish university have been working on sun damage prevention in the form of disposable wristbands.

According to a recent article in the British newspaper DailyMail, sun damage prevention may soon be as easy as putting on a paper wrist strap. It works by changing color from yellow to pink as the strength of UV radiation increases. Since people with different skin types have different levels of tolerance to UV exposure, there will be a variety of different bands available. For example, for people with fair hair and light skin, the band will turn pink more quickly than it would for darker-skinned people.

“We are very excited about the UV dosimeter technology and we look forward to developing it further and commercialising it. There is a substantial need out in the market for a functional UV dosimeter and we look forward to continuing the process,” Swedish entrepreneur Claes Lindahl told the DailyMail.

“The sunburn monitor will make a significant contribution to public health as an affordable, fashionable device which enables people to enjoy the benefits of the sun while at the same time keeping them alert to the risks of over-exposure,” said a representative from the University of Strathclyde, which originally developed the device.

If you have already suffered from excess sun damage, you know that it can accelerate the signs of aging on your face and body. Fortunately, there are skin care procedures that can reverse the signs of aging caused by sun damage. One of the most popular techniques is the IPL photofacial, which can eliminate wrinkles, discoloration, and other common flaws on the skin.
