Why One Session Isn't Enough: The Science Behind Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal is one of the most popular aesthetic treatments today and for good reason. It offers a long-term solution for reducing unwanted hair, eliminating the need for constant shaving, waxing, or tweezing. But one of the most common questions we hear from first-time clients is: “Why do I need multiple sessions?”

The short answer: it’s all about how hair grows and how laser technology interacts with that growth. In this post, we’ll break down the science behind laser hair removal and explain why a single session just won’t deliver the smooth, lasting results you’re looking for.

How Laser Hair Removal Works

Laser hair removal uses concentrated light energy to target and destroy hair follicles. The pigment (melanin) in the hair absorbs the laser’s light, which heats and damages the follicle, inhibiting future growth.

But here's the catch: lasers are only effective on hair in a specific growth phase and not all your hairs are in that phase at the same time.

The Hair Growth Cycle: The Real Reason Behind Multiple Sessions

To understand why one session isn’t enough, you need to know how hair grows. Each hair on your body grows in its own cycle, independent of the hairs around it. That means not all hairs are in the same stage at the same time.

There are 3 main stages of hair growth

  1. Anagen (Active Growth Phase)
This is the phase when hair is growing and still attached to the follicle. The hair contains the most melanin, making it the ideal target for laser treatment.
  2. Catagen (Transition Phase)
Hair stops growing and begins to separate from the follicle. Laser treatment is much less effective in this phase.
  3. Telogen (Resting Phase)
The follicle is dormant, and the hair eventually sheds. Hair in this phase is not affected by laser at all.

Laser treatment is most effective during the anagen phase, when the hair is still attached to the follicle and has enough pigment to absorb the laser energy. Unfortunately, at any given time, only about 20–30% of your hair is in this active growth phase.

Why Multiple Sessions Matter

Because only a portion of your hair is in the target phase during any one session, you’ll need a series of treatments spaced several weeks apart to catch more hairs as they enter the anagen phase.

Typically, clients need 6 to 8 sessions to achieve optimal results, with some requiring touch-ups depending on:

  • Hair color and thickness
  • Skin tone
  • The area being treated
  • Hormonal factors

What Happens If You Only Do One Session?

You may see a slight reduction in hair after just one session. In fact, many people notice a period where the hair appears to “fall out” or shed after treatment. But this is temporary and largely reflects the treated hairs that were in the anagen phase.

However, the untreated hairs (those in catagen or telogen stages) will continue to grow normally. That means without follow-up sessions, you’ll start seeing regrowth within a few weeks. One session alone won’t provide significant or lasting hair reduction.

Factors That Affect Your Results

Laser hair removal is highly customizable, and your results can vary depending on several factors:

  • Hair Color & Thickness: Dark, coarse hairs absorb the laser energy more effectively. Lighter hairs may not respond as well.
  • Skin Tone: Today’s laser technology can safely treat a wide range of skin tones, but the settings need to be adjusted appropriately.
  • Hormones: Hormonal fluctuations (due to pregnancy, PCOS, or other conditions) can influence hair growth patterns and may require ongoing maintenance.
  • Treatment Area: Certain areas like the legs or arms may respond more quickly than hormone-sensitive areas like the face or bikini line.

That’s why a professional consultation is essential to create a tailored treatment plan based on your unique hair, skin, and goals.

Long-Term Benefits of Staying Consistent

While it may seem like a commitment, completing your full series of treatments is absolutely worth it. Clients who stay consistent with their appointments often report:

  1. Up to 90% permanent hair reduction
  2. Smoother, softer skin with less irritation
  3. Elimination of razor bumps and ingrown hairs
  4. Long-lasting convenience and confidence

Many clients also enjoy the added benefit of lighter regrowth (if any) and fewer maintenance needs over time.

Laser hair removal is a science-backed process not a quick fix. One session starts the journey, but consistency is key to achieving smooth, lasting results.
